This gouache painting is inspired by Madeline Miller’s book, Circe. I absolutely love this novel. In it, Miller takes the character of Circe from The Odyssey, in which Circe is a witch who lives alone on the island of Aiaia, and turns Odysseus’ crew into pigs when they come onto her island. Miller’s book is written from Circe’s perspective, and tells of her exile to Aiaia and how she set about learning witchcraft and making the island her home before meeting Odysseus. Late in Miller’s book, Circe goes to the deep sea to meet Trygon, a little known god who takes the shape of a stingray. They have a fascinating conversation that I will not spoil, but painted to remind myself of all the power and wisdom there is to be found in the deep.
