This gouache illustration appears in Book 3 of my Brief, Complete Herstory, and it depicts a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) woman teaching the first wave feminist Matilda Joslyn Gage about the status of women in matriarchal cultures. The painting was made after I read Gage’s Woman, Church and State and Sally Roesh Wagner’s Sisters in Spirit: Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Influence on Early American Feminists. These books clearly show that first wave feminists shaped their vision of a culture radically transformed in women’s favour, from indigenous women who lived in such cultures, the Haudenosaunee in particular.
